Environmental Management Committees (EMC)
Environmental committees are established in each faculty of the University of Peradeniya, with the intention of implementing the environmental management system of the University. The main role of EMC is to coordinate all departments/units within a given Faculty on issues pertaining to environment in liaise with the Center for Environmental Sustainability (CES) of he University of Peradeniya. The EMCs are composed of academics and non-academic staff, and students, who are passionate about the sustainability of the environment. Â

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The Environmental Management Committee (EMC) has a broad mandate of coordinating all departments/units within the Faculty on matters pertaining to environmental issues in liaise with the Center for Environmental Studies (CES) of the University of Peradeniya. It also promotes environmentally-friendly measures within the Faculty through internalizing the best practices in academic and administrative activities.

Purpose
Â
The main purpose of the EMC is to provide assistance to resolve environment related issues, while providing strategic direction, policy initiation and endorsement for the Faculty in relation to conservation, monitoring and management of natural resources.

Membership
Â
The members of the Committee shall consist of;

The Chairperson
An academic staff member from each department
A technical officer from each department
A representative from the Dean’s office
Representatives from the Units, Cells, and the Faculty library
Two student representatives
Â
All members shall be appointed by the Faculty Board for a period of three calendar years.

Roles and Responsibilities
Â
The EMC shall be responsible for;
Â
initiating policy formulations related to environmental management at the Faculty
making recommendations to the CES of the University of Peradeniya for any changes in legislation, regulations and policies related to environment management
assisting in the preparation or review of environmentally sustainable strategies and policies
providing leadership to introduce and facilitate best practices that promote environmental well-being at the Faculty
establishing links with civil society organizations and the private sector to
ensure effective collaborations with the Faculty in matters related to the environment
taking the lead to ensure that issues related to environment and its
management are raised in appropriate forums at the Faculty

Meetings and reporting
Â
The EMC shall meet once in every three months, or as required and report matters to the CES of the University of Peradeniya.
 A quorum of the EMC shall comprise one-third of the members, including the Chairperson and the Secretary.
Preparation and distribution of minutes of the EMC is the responsibility of the Secretary.
Recommendations of the EMC will be implemented after adopting the relevant minutes at the Faculty Board.
