University of Peradeniya Launches Environmental Sustainability Pledge

University of Peradeniya Commemorated the World Environment Day on 5th June 2023, by officially launching the “Environmental Sustainability Pledge of University of Peradeniya”. The Environmental Sustainability pledge is a new concept for the University system in Sri Lanka and the pledge symbolizes the commitment of the community of University of Peradeniya towards a sustainable future.
The Pledge was compiled by the Centre for Environmental Sustainability (CES) of University of Peradeniya to evoke a positive attitudinal change in the University community to conserve water resources and natural resources; reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and wastage; and to promote sustainable transportation and proper waste management. By signing the pledge, signatory individuals make a self-commitment to adopt an environmental sustainability lifestyle while they are at the University premises and beyond.
The ceremonial signing of the Environmental Sustainability Pledge of University of Peradeniya was done by Prof. MD. Lamawansa, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Peradeniya in the presence of Prof. WM. Terence Madhujith, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tilak Hewawasam, the Director/CES, Dr. G.A.N. Suranjith, the Deputy Director (Research and Environmental management)/ CES, and Mr. EMGMB. Ekanayake, the Acting Registrar/ University of Peradeniya. The event was physically attended by the Deans of faculties, Directors of PG institutes, Directors of Centres of the University, the Chairpersons of Environmental Management Committees, the Bursar, Chief Medical Officer, and Curators of the University, and student representatives. Many more academic, non-academic staff members and students witnessed the event via Zoom.
The signing of the pledge is a significant step forward for the University of Peradeniya in its commitment to environmental sustainability. The pledge is a call to action for all members of the University community to work together to create a more sustainable future.
