Seminar on World Migratory Birds, "Diversity and Conservation of Waterbirds in the Northern Avifaunal Region of Sri Lanka: Insights from a Five-Year Study"



The World Migratory Bird Day of 2023 falls on May 14, 2023. The Centre for Environmental Sustainability (CES) commemorated the World Migratory Bird Day with a seminar on May 11, 2023, at the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science. One of the leading bird experts, Dr. Chaminda Wijesundara from the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, University of Peradeniya delivered a seminar on the topic “Diversity and Conservation of Waterbirds in the Northern Avifaunal Region of Sri Lanka: Insights from a Five-Year Study” based on a long-term research project he and his team conducted in the northern region of Sri Lanka. In his seminar, Dr. Wijesundara explained the waterbird diversity of the northern avifaunal region of Sri Lanka including both migratory and resident species, and their distribution. Further, he elaborated on threats faced by the birds in his region and the effort taken to conserve these species in the northern avifaunal region of Sri Lanka. Undergraduates, postgraduates, and staff members of the University of Peradeniya participated in this seminar. It was informative and was appreciated by the attendees as it raised awareness about the importance of rich avian diversity in Sri Lanka.
